Move the registration, keep the records
A transfer changes your registrar, not your Nameservers or DNS records. You can manage DNS, custom Nameservers, URL forwarding, and transfer locks in your console.
What the domain lands in
Four screens of the domain console, and what each one actually does. Open any of them before you move anything.
- Transfer lock and the auth code The transfer lock turns back on right after the domain arrives. You can create your auth code anytime, with no support ticket and no five-day wait. Open the page
- Nameservers you set yourself Point the domain to our Nameservers, your host, or any provider. Update them directly from your console. Open the page
- A DNS zone you can edit A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV and NS records with the TTL you choose, on our nameservers, at no extra charge. Open the page
- Every domain on one screen Registration and expiry dates, renewal state and the registry's own status for every name you hold with us, each with its own reference. Open the page
The whole move, four steps
- Unlock and get the code
At your current registrar: switch off transfer lock and request the EPP / auth code. It arrives by email, usually instantly.
- Check it at the top of this page
Enter your domain above. We check that it exists and can be moved. Then, enter your auth code at checkout. We use it right away and never store it.
- Approve the confirmation
Registries email the registrant a confirmation. Approve it and the clock runs; ignoring it just means a slower yes.
- Done: the lock turns back on
The domain lands in your Hostrena console with its nameservers and records exactly as they were, and the registry transfer lock goes straight back on.
Start at least two weeks before your domain expires. Last-minute transfers work, but extra time keeps things simple and stress-free.
Extensions that transfer in
The eight we are asked for most, with what the registrar change costs and how long the registry usually takes. The full list is one click below.
We transfer in 561 extensions in all. See every transfer price
If an extension is not listed, it cannot transfer in yet. Contact support for the best options.
What happens to DNS during the move?
Nothing, and that is the point. A transfer only changes who manages the domain. Your Nameservers and DNS records stay the same, so your website and email keep working for all 5 to 7 days. Once the move is done, you can switch to Hostrena DNS whenever you want, or keep what you have.
Where do I find my EPP code?
Log in to your current registrar and look for "transfer code", "auth code", or "EPP" near the lock setting. If you cannot find it, ICANN rules require them to email it to you within five days.
Turn off the transfer lock at your current provider before using the code. Once it is unlocked, start here.
Sixty seconds before you start
- Transfer lock is switched off at the current registrar
- You hold a fresh EPP / auth code
- Your registrant email works, because we send confirmations there.
- The domain is older than 60 days and not expired
What is a domain transfer and how does it work?
A transfer moves domain management from one provider to another. Your domain, DNS, and site visitors stay unaffected. You prove ownership with an EPP code from your current provider. We submit the request, the registry asks for confirmation, and a few days later you manage the domain from Hostrena.
What is an EPP code and where do I find it?
The EPP code (also called an auth code or transfer key) is a secret code that proves you own the domain. Your current provider displays it in your domain settings or emails it to you. ICANN requires them to provide it within five days. Keep it safe like a password until the move finishes.
Will my website or email go down during the transfer?
No. A transfer never touches your Nameservers or DNS records. It only changes who manages your registration. Your website and email stay online the whole time. Just make sure you do not delete your old DNS records before the transfer finishes. Leave them alone and the move will be seamless.
How long does a transfer take?
Domains like .com usually take 5 to 7 days, mostly due to a standard wait time that your current provider can release early. Country domains have their own rules. For example, .uk moves in minutes with a tag change, while others take one to two weeks. See the timeline cards above or check the full price list for details.
Can I transfer a domain registered less than 60 days ago?
Not yet. ICANN locks domains for 60 days after registration or a recent transfer, and no provider can bypass this rule. Just check your registration date and start the transfer once the 60 days pass. Some country extensions have different rules, which you can find on the full price list.
Does a transfer add time to my expiry date?
Whether it does is the registry's rule for that extension, not ours, and it is not something we promise on any name. What we can tell you before you pay is the transfer price for your extension and the timeline the registry usually takes; the expiry date the registry actually holds is on the domain's screen in your console the moment it lands.
Is transferring safe, or can someone steal my domain?
A legitimate transfer needs three things an attacker rarely has together: the unlock switch, the EPP code, and access to the registrant email. That is exactly why the lock stays on at all times here, and re-arms itself the moment your inbound transfer completes. Protect the registrant mailbox with a strong password and 2FA, and hijacking becomes a story about other people.
What if my current registrar refuses the transfer?
Under ICANN rules, providers cannot deny a valid transfer without a clear reason, such as an unpaid bill or an ownership dispute. Delays are usually minor obstacles like hidden unlock settings or slow code delivery. Pay any open balance and request the EPP code. If delays continue, our team can help you escalate the issue.
Can I transfer country extensions like .de or .uk?
Yes, for most domains. For example, .uk transfers are free and take just minutes once your provider updates the tag. Extensions like .de, .fr, and .nl follow standard timelines. Some like .sa and .ae cannot transfer yet, so you can register a new domain and point DNS to us instead. Check the price list for current options.
Can I change DNS after the transfer completes?
Yes, completely. As soon as the domain arrives in your account, you have full control. You can switch to Hostrena Nameservers, keep your current setup, or point to another host. Many customers leave DNS as is for a week and make updates later. Take your time, because your existing records continue to work.
How much does a transfer cost?
The exact price per extension is on the price list, and for most it equals a year's renewal. .uk is free outright. There are no service fees, no expedite charges and nothing added at checkout beyond the price you were shown.
My domain just expired. Can I still transfer it?
Renew it at your current registrar first, even for just one year. Expired domains cannot be transferred, and waiting risks extra fees or losing the name completely. Once it is renewed and past any 60-day lock, transfer it normally. The renewal time you just bought moves with the domain.
Do I need to contact my current registrar?
Usually not beyond their control panel. You can almost always unlock the domain and get your EPP code yourself. After we submit the request, any email they send is either an approval notice or an offer to release the domain early. If you do nothing, the transfer simply finishes on the normal schedule.
Can I cancel a transfer after starting it?
Yes. You can cancel at any time during the pending window (five to seven days for most extensions) in your panel or by contacting support. Your domain will stay right where it was. Once a transfer completes, it cannot be undone directly; you would need to transfer it back after the registry's 60-day lock.
Will you help me through the transfer?
From start to finish. Tell support which registrar you are leaving, and we will give you clear, step-by-step instructions to find their unlock setting and EPP code. A team member will also track your transfer until it finishes. Moving many domains? We will manage the batch and confirm each one. Moving your domains should take minutes, not hours.
Can I transfer many domains at once?
Yes. Bulk transfers are common for agencies managing client domains. Gather the EPP codes (one for each domain), give the list to support or enter them at checkout, and track every domain in your panel. Each domain still gets its own registry confirmation, but you only need to manage a single list.
