Definition
The community fork of MySQL, created by MySQL's original author after the Oracle acquisition. It is a drop-in replacement — same protocol, same SQL, same tools — with faster release cycles and some extra storage engines. Many Linux distributions and hosting platforms now ship MariaDB wherever "MySQL" is advertised.
